Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation

A physical therapist uses several exercises and modalities to treat various musculoskeletal disorders, sometimes for depressing pain in several disorders such as in fibromyalgia. Sometimes physical therapists may induce slight electric stimulation in your body for speeding up the post-operative healing process. The procedure of applying current to the body is known as TENS(transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation).

A TENS unit is a small battery-operated device that can help to manage pain and reduce the sensation of pain in our body. This device has electrodes that are attached to our body near the area which needs electrical nerve stimulation. electrical impulses can be adjusted in frequency and intensity as well according to the individual needs of the patient.

Precautions

Before any type of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation ask your physical therapist to make sure that it is safe for you. Never try to use transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation if you are pregnant or planning to be pregnant or if you have certain medical disorders such as epilepsy, poor sensation, or a pacemaker. In addition to that never apply electrodes at

  • Head 
  • Neck
  • Mouth or eyes
  • Chest and upper back at the same time
  • Broken or burned  skins
  • Tumors
  • Sensitive areas
  • Allergic areas
  • On a scar tissue
  • Numb areas
