What is a tendon?

Tendons are part of our musculoskeletal system that attaches muscles to bones. Tendons are of different patterns and different shapes, sizes, and structures as well. They are mostly present at joints most of the time tenosynovitis occurs in the joints or parts of the body that are used frequently such as shoulder, hand, and wrist

Common sites of tenosynovitis in body parts that are most commonly affected by tensor synovitis are

  • Achilles tendon of ankle
  • Tendons of thumb
  •  Tendons of fingers and hand
  • Tendons of wrist
  • The organ which most likely to be affected by this condition are the arms shoulders waste ankles knee legs and hips

The tendons reside within a fluid known as synovial fluid; this is a very thick fluid that is between the joints. In addition to that, the covering of tendons known as a synovial sheet  also allows the tendon to slide normally during motion

Types of Tenosynovitis

The two main types of tenosynovitis are acute infectious synovitis and noninfectious inflammatory synovitis

In the acute infectious type, the tendon and synovial sheet are inflamed because of an infection for example any bacteria or viral infection. It is very rare and only two percent of people are affected by this it requires an antibiotic course for treatment

The more common type of tenosynovitis is noninfectious because of overuse of tendon or repetitive injury to a tendon or maybe any trauma which can lead to tendon irritation and inflammation.

Tenosynovitis Symptoms

Tenosynovitis can be easily identified because its symptoms are very obvious it symptoms are

  • Pain in the affected tendon
  • Swelling of the affected tendon
  • Swelling and palor of the affected tendon
  • Functional loss
  • Inability to achieve normal range of motion

Causes of tenosynovitis

Some  of the possible causes of tenosynovitis maybe are

  • Repetitive awkward motion leading to strain
  • Overuse of tendons
  • Muscle imbalances of body parts near the affected tendon (a stronger muscle next to a weaker muscle can cause opposing forces)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  •  osteoarthritis or maybe osteoporosis in some cases
  • Trauma or sudden injury treatment

There are many treatment options for tenosynovitis but the most effective option is a proper physical therapy session because a physical therapist not only depress the symptoms and  help in the fast healing process of the tendon but also helps you to avoid the injury again by guiding you proper motion techniques a physical therapist will suggest you take rest until the tendon heals after the tendon heals the physical therapist with practice several exercises and modalities to strengthen the tendons so that such condition doesn’t occur again
