Definition

 It is the branch of medicine in which we treat patients‘ injuries and make them mobile by physical means such as exercise, heat, radiation, etc. In this mode of treatment use of drugs is almost negligible

History

If we surf back in the past then we will come to know that physical therapy has its origins deep in medicine. The first individual to practice physical therapy was Hippocrates and the late genus(460 BC).

Modern physical therapy was established in the 19th century. Many developments in physical therapy were seen in world war 2 when the majority of civilians and combatants were wounded badly and there was a lack of medications. To cure them physicians started testing different exercises and other physical means which lead to several advancements in physical therapy.

Types

There are mainly 5 sub-branches of physical therapy.

Orthopedic physical therapy

In this type of physical therapy, therapists are specialized in curing disorders of your musculoskeletal system. It covers your bones, joints, muscles ligaments, and tendon, and connective tissues 

Geriatric physical therapy 

We all have old age people like grandma in our home and, commonly, most of the senior people suffer from loss of strength and mobility. Such conditions are treated by geriatric physical therapists. They help aged people to maintain the maximum degree of mobility. 

Neurological physical therapy

As the name suggests it deals with our neurons. It covers all neurons of our body, brain, and spinal cord as well. Patients with different neurological ailments such as Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis may suffer from mobility issues and are treated by a neurological physical therapist.
